Faculty Biography: Joseph
Domask

Joseph Domask is an assistant professor at
American University in the School of International Service and in the Washington
Semester Program. He directs and teaches the International Environment and
Development Seminar. As part of this course, he developed three-week field-based
academic programs in South Africa, Brazil, Mozambique, and Costa Rica and has
led student groups to these countries since the Fall 2000. He also served as
Co-Chair of the Washington Semester Faculty from 2002 to 2004. Dr. Domask’s
specific areas of research and expertise include international forest
conservation and forest certification, NGO-business partnerships, Brazilian
Amazonia, ecotourism, business and the environment, and international
environmental NGO strategies. He has published articles on these and related
issues in several journals as well as a book chapter in Globalization and
NGOs (2003).

A few words on IED
I teach in this program because I
deeply believe in it and because I know that it changes students' lives,
opens up whole new worlds of opportunities, and directly engages
students in their fields of study at multiple levels, from rural and
isolated communities to the halls of power in Washington, DC.

| Before coming to American University, Dr. Domask was a research program officer
in the Global Forest Program at the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, DC. In
this post, he was responsible for conducting and coordinating research
activities for the World Bank/WWF Forest Alliance - a high level partnership
between the world's largest development organization and the world's largest
environmental organization. He also served on the Alliance's core management
team, which formulated policy and strategy initiatives for the Alliance and
functioned as a coordinating body between regional staff and the upper
management of WWF and the World Bank. Prior to coming to D.C., Domask was as a
graduate assistant and fellow at the North-South Center, a research and policy
institute in Miami devoted to Western Hemisphere issues. While in Miami, Dr.
Domask earned his Ph.D. (1997) and M.A. (1995) at the University of Miami in
international affairs and Latin American studies, with emphases on development,
environment, and U.S. foreign policy. In 1992, he earned a B.S. in environmental
science and policy at the University of Michigan. Among other activities, he is
an avid outdoor enthusiast, triathlete, ultimate frisbee player, and rock
climber. |
